3E was the only edition of D&D where I felt like Multiclassing was cool and helped me make more interesting characters. People still abused it though.
Every other edition, it feels like a kludge for “I don’t want to play a class-based RPG.” These days, I can't even be arsed with multiclassing. I can make a million cool characters without it, so why bother?

Subclasses/Archetypes definitely do away with a lot of reasons to Multiclass AND they make it more complex in some ways. But I still think there is a little value in it time to time. Mainly where certain character tropes/archetypes don’t exist! I wonder if we'll see the return of Prestige Classes in some form.

Is 3E worth trying out for a bit? I’m utterly fascinated with the edition. It seems to have a lot of cool customization. Of course, there’s mountains of content, but then again, Sturgeon’s law. I'm not sure any edition of D&D is worth going back to without the kind of whole-souled effort and support you get from a currently in-print edition.

I’ve had a few cases of players multiclassing for character/story reasons, which were cool, but usually it’s just “Well this let’s me do X combo for 9 billion damage” My group was never that focused on min-maxing.
