The reality, though, is that money in D&D is weird. A candle is 1cp, which could equal anywhere from $.50 – $2. However a hammer is $1gp, which would be between $50 and $200.
So it seems that thinking of D&D money as real world currency is pretty much a waste of brain time. Instead, think of it in terms of hammers.
So Gustav needs 2,654 hammers.
