Fun idea for a D&D setting: an evil city ruled by a plutocratic governing class, where nobles are patrons to adventuring groups and use them as gladiatorial status symbols. Each manor has a dungeon so guests can show off their group’s skills against the host’s traps and monsters.

Some adventurers earn enough glory for their patrons to retire and live in luxury on their bonuses. Other veterans turn to dungeon design themselves, becoming “dungeon masters” who sell their devious designs to the highest merchant bidders. Some even become nobles themselves. As the city grows, its dungeons sprawl ever deeper. Noble families fall and their dungeons lie forgotten. Thieves guilds tunnel into them and turn them into treasure vaults, or monsters reclaim them. Meanwhile, renegade delvers dig into active dungeons to raid them for plunder.

Each noble family is headed by an actual dragon, and their banners and dress match the scales of their draconian master. As new families form, they must choose a scion from the dragon lineage to head their family. The vast sums of money owned by each family is the dragon’s hoard. Yes, this setting is literally “Dungeons and Dragons”.
