are initiative cards actually useful? Feels like an extra step 🤔 I found them useful in other editions when initiative could change. Now I just write a list.

they facilitate encounters where characters hold their actions to shift position in the initiative count. Additionally, they give a specific place to mark spell durations, effects, and damage. Reminders for specific powers, equipment, or actions are easily put on them Initiative doesn't change in 5e.
That can work for other editions/systems where things like ready or delay do change your position in the count.
The duration thing is okay, but I find tally marks by a name on the list work just as well, and don't run the risk of miss-shuffle.
