2/2 @mattcolville @ChrisPerkinsDnD @mikemearls #dndpeople, are there lore reasons why wizards must forget their spells? Or why they can only prepare a limited number of spells each day when they could in theory just cast out of their spellbooks? I get that it’s for game balance The wizard section in the PHB explains the mechanics well enough, but not why those mechanics make sense IN universe. Is there more written about it elsewhere in one of the books? Thank you for any responses!

Spell slots represent the energy from the weave that you can catch and contain. Casting puts both mental and physical stress on you; tables show what a caster can usually handle.

Spell preparation is similar – a spell is more than the rote words and gestures. it requires something similar to magic item attunement for a caster to truly master and use a spell
