I keep forgetting to ask. In a game I run we continue to have confusion about initiative, can a rogues expertise increase it? Also, does expertise effect passive checks as well? Because if it does, I have a rouge/monk that will go first forever and always notice everything. I can’t tell if he’s a good builder or if he did something shady. Input from someone who literally wrote the book would be helpful.

The rogue's Expertise works with skills and thieves' tools. Initiative is neither a skill nor thieves' tools. #DnD https://t.co/eA0j8EOIHP

and yet, Initiative is a skill check, yes?

Warlock casts Hex on target before combat, disadvantage on initiative then right?

Initiative is an ability check, right? That's why the bard thing works on it?

Initiative is a Dexterity check. No skill is used with it. #DnD https://t.co/JgqbDzVOZw
