In 1989 TSR launched their "Complete Handbook" series which provided options on different classes, races, equipment, and settings. All that I will say on the subject was that they varied in quality. A good example of how management's dictate to stick so close to 1e hurt 2e. This book had two systems – proficiency groups and kits – that should've been core rules.
