@matthewmercer What do you think of death punishment? Like if a character dies, do you reduce their xp for their new character, do you match the others xp? Do you punish at all?

For many years, I instituted a penalty that equates to the loss of a level, or a their new character came in a level or two below the other players.
Over time, I found this just wasn’t much fun for anyone involved. (1/2) https://t.co/ewBtw6HpwR

The theoretical competitive edge that not-dying gave you really didn’t factor into play when no one was playing in competition with each other.
Other players were happy and eager to have new or returning characters be at their best.
I ended up abandoning it. (2/2)

"Mechanically punishing players who've already lost a beloved character may not actually be fun for anyone involved".
…it's always baffling to me when this is something people have to realise rather than treat as obvious.

I believe it’s largely a vestige from learning how to play in an era without many forums/social media. You pick up elements that local gamers tell you are “how the game should be played”, and having no other point of reference, you adopt those rules. https://t.co/oFylRPCiO2
