Controversial Opinion: Ability scores and modifiers should be the same thing. I know 3-18 ability scores are legacy, but ultimately the modifier is the only number thing that matters aside from a few edge cases. This would streamline D&D for new players.

Yes, one of the hardest thing to get new players to understand and it somehow manages to be fantastically irrelevant and crucial at the same time. As much as I have two decades of wonderful ability scores memories, it’s time to let them go/merge them.
