D&D house rule inspired by a conversation with @wildrosemage:
If the target of a disintegrate spell succeeds on their Dexterity save, the ray now functions as a line spell, targeting whoever (or whatever) is behind the original intended target and so on until it hits something. Disintegrate is one of my favorite spells, a little green ray so dastardly it turns things to ASH. The devs have said fireball is so iconic that it's intentionally overpowered, and I want disintegrate to have that energy!
Also please follow Hannah bc she is brilliant. 👏

People are commenting that this is evil, but it would also be fair game for a player! C'mon, you know you want to…

Awww, Justice, you are very kind. <3 And I'm also taking counterspell in any game I play with you ever.

Now I kinda want to this with Finger of Death as well. Imagine pointing at a target, and the target dives behind a mook. Just personally, I wouldn’t do it with finger of death for 2 reasons: 1) it’s not explicitly a beam or a ray, so it seems less fair. This is probably also because 2) it deals half damage on a successful save, so it doesn’t feel like it can fully miss the original target.
