Hey #DnD scholars… if you have a +1 (etc) weapon and can use weapon as a spell focus, you get that +1 for spells too right? No, you'll notice in the description of magic weapons that grant these sorts of bonuses (usually +1 to +3), it specifies that you add that bonus to attack and damage rolls made using the weapon. That's referring to weapon attacks.

Not the answer I wanted, but makes sense… I guess 😒. I was looking over artificer infusions and wondered why there was a weapon and a spell focus infusion; answers that one. Thanks for being on top of all these things!

I know what you said. But. For the sake of argument (its popular). You can use any item you infuse as a spell focus. Gives a +1 to attack and damage rolls, doesn’t specify if it’s weapon or spell roll. Just made with said weapon. @ me. Y’all wrote it. When you cast a spell that incorporates an attack or damage roll, the spell is what's prompting you to make the roll, not the components of the spell (a focus is a material component).
That said, if you want magic swords to add to spell rolls in your game, go nuts!

Items like the rod of the pact keeper and wand of the war mage can specifically add a bonus to spell attacks made while holding the item.

The best answer to all these type questions is ask the DM you’re playing with. There’s only rules for players, for Dungeon Masters, they’re more like guidelines.
Yeah that’s how the rules were “intended”, the game is meant to have +1 weapons and +1 spell focuses, but there have always been ways around this with +1 weapons with spell focuses built into them (a paladins hammer with holy runes inscribed on it, a magic sword with a small magic gem in the pommel or blade *cough* Eragon, a druid’s spear with glowing feathers at the base of the blade) but if you’re the DM you can rule/change anything to how you want it!!
