Keep the campaign ideas loose and fluid. You never know what the group will decide to do with information you give them and being able to change course to follow your players can let them explore the world without feeling railroaded. It is good to have a direction that you want to go, but at the end of the day the game is about the players.
I had an npc quest giver that the party had spent the entire first quest debating about his motives so I rolled with it and let him be the villain they thought he was.
