In our home Eberron, drow light sensitivity doesn’t manifest as pain but as lethargy. Drow become like cats on catnip in sunlight.

It makes sense to me. The legend says that Drow were “imbued with the essence of night”; saying that sunlight saps their energy seems reasonable.
