Dungeons and Dragons' Sources of Magic magic is a fundamental element for D&D
so I talked to Mike Merle’s about where
magic comes from for not only player
characters of monsters as well but kind
of what we see that cosmologically is
there are two sources of magic to do the
external source we tap into or an
internal source so characters like the
Wizards cleric and warlock they rely on
external sources characters like
sorcerers and mystics they rely on an
internal source then you can break it
down by is this a learned thing like a
science or is it something that just
came to naturally so for Sorcerer’s
magic that’s natural just naturally
manifest they just start using it or the
mystic is something that requires a lot
of focus dedication and training more
like a wizard so that’s kind of how we
see you know you’re all ural tapping
into you know into magic as an energy
it’s just how you get there is different
and then how you’re getting there is
changing how it operates and how you can
manipulate it and use it then you find a
mystic since it’s an internal source
you’re tapping into but it requires such
dedication and focus is you have more
flexibility than other characters you
know because unlike the wizard who the
wizard operates according to a set of
rules almost like the rules of physics
you master the rules you learn when we
learn the formula the mystic is more
manipulating it’s more of a combination
of rigid understanding but combined with
this idea of more flexibility till most
build effects as you go
now D&D doesn’t have a completely free
form magic system but we captured by
this idea that the disciplines you can
choose how many points to spend on them
in create different effects something
like a dragon like we have depicted
dragons being casters like sorcerers
where they just have innate spells but
it’s also since dragons are intelligent
any intelligent creature in theory look
enough practice could could master magic
like a wizard most monsters though their
magic is feels natural to them like they
just they just know they can breathe
fire or they know they can put a hex on
someone it’s more reflexive like for us
like throwing something you know they
don’t really do it through study you’re
probably more resembles like how a
sorcerer would feel about magic you know
where it’s just this is just something I
can do like I know if I stare at
something and really focus on I can I
can burst into flames so it’s probably
more like a sorcerers understanding of
magic now it’s not true for all
creatures I think
creatures as they increase in
intelligence might think of it more like
a wizard
like I always imagined that mine players
think of their psyonix has like a
science that they study whereas maybe
creatures like a you know uh well you
think of an NPC or something like that
like I you know come bugbear shaman it
might be more villages they think okay
this is Boston come God’s just one gift
I’ve been given and so you really kind
of all turned on their culture you know
now ever creatures not intelligent it
doesn’t even think we just know it does
it you know it’s reflexive like a
spider’s poisonous bite you know just
happen to be magical like a basilisk
just knows you know by turn things to
sell and this is what I do it’s my job I
think so or are you now a cockatrice
there’s there’s not a bottomless yeah
there they go to tick finishing school
yeah so again it’s one of those things
where I think I think a good guide if
you think is a dungeon master is look at
your creatures like you like wisdom
intelligence of charisma take the
highest of those and I’d say
intelligence of the highest they
probably think of their magic as a
science and skill the wisdoms the
highest they might think that more has a
religious gift and if charisma is the
highest they might think that more this
is innate ability that they have you
know this is just I’m special because I
can do this
you know more like a superpower
you
