D&D is a game of exceptions.
A rule is a rule, until it isn’t. Features, spells, other rules, monsters, playable races, all kinds of things occur to modify the expected baseline. Sometimes the thing that shifts a rule is us, using it in the moment to suit our fun.

That is a great way to state it. Every rule in D&D is more properly an exception rather than a rule in the classic sense. The whole thing makes more sense when viewed through that lens.

Tried to explain this to my nine year olds “What do you mean??” Dang. Nine year olds are usually such champions of subtlety and nuance though.
