Have you ever had a #dnd character officially retire from adventuring (rather than just be abandoned)? What did they do next? Yep. Mostly due to campaigns reaching their conclusion, but one that retired mid-campaign had cleared his and his brother's names, and his family were no longer in danger from the corrupt official plaguing them, so he went home to rebuild their fortunes.
