your help is appreciated: 1 of my players is a paladin and has a sword that I have put part of a kraken’s consciousness in. the sword tries to entice her (thread) and slowly make her more acceptable towars its goals. it is a sentient sword in short order and it is malicious. I was hoping to put a multiclass option forward in this manner to the player (becoming a hexblade of this sword patron) however the player has been adamant that she

doesn’t like multiclassing. I don’t want to enforce it of course. What are some other ways I can still have this sword have an effect on her? should also point out that this kraken is 1 of the BBEG's (DM'ing Storm Kings Thunder though modified) so he is definitely relevant to the story

Have you looked at the sentient weapon rules in the DMG? They can have direct influence on their wielded, even forcing them to take actions aligned with the weapon’s goals.
The example sentient weapons show how that can be used in the “Personality” section#

I have yes! Just unsure if the player is ok with me making the sword she’s had as a family heirloom all her life (part of her backstory) into a malevolent sentient weapon. Could I add something to make sure she & party could make the sword not sentient anymore should she wish to? Absolutely! That sounds like a fantastic quest, to rid the malevolent presence from her family’s ancestral weapon.

thank you so so so much for answering my tweet 🙂 we lead busy lives as it is so I’m very grateful for this. I haven’t been DM’ing for very long so a little uncertain about homebrewing things. I’ll definitely work that into the story ^^ My pleasure! Tweaking and creati things for your game can be so much fun and incredibly rewarding. 🙂
