Actor and DM friends, how do you give an NPC a subtle accent without going overboard and making them sound like they’re from a completely different part of the world than the NPC from the next village over?

To clarify, I KNOW THAT I DON’T HAVE TO DO ACCENTS. I also know that I can use other vocal and physical cues to adjust the way an NPC speaks.
What I’m asking for is advice on giving an NPC a slight working-class British accent without slipping into full-on amateur Cockney.

I tend to emulate a character from a movie I know well. This means I have a clear concept of the sound I’m going for, but I don’t have to lean into it too hard. A little goes a long way. It also helps me remember the voice by picturing the actor/character.

I find it hard to explain this stuff, but finding just a couple of phonetic elements of the accent and working at those so you can do them subtley. If a real accent, check YT vids for people with the same “softness” you want maybe? I like it. Thank you!!
