Historical settings in fantasy take work – you need to really know what you’re dealing with pretty deeply to achieve an accurate representation in fantasy.
It’s hard enough to depict historical Western cultures correctly from the point of a view of a modern Westerner, and it only gets worse when you cross over to Eastern cultures which we experience mostly through pop culture nonsense and stereotypes. Accurate representation requires a TON of research and knowledge.
I’m a trained historian who has a higher than average appreciation of Asian cultures, but even I am hesitant when dabbling in that realm, because it’s just so far removed from my own experiences and expertise. I’d probably want to spend at least several months performing in depth research if I wanted to create an Asian setting I could trust to be properly respectful and accurate, and even then I’d err hugely on the side of caution.
