In my experience, too many DMs overestimate their own ability to “sell” the moment where they fudge a roll.
Players rarely have an incentive to call them out on it – a fudge is usually in their best interests and there’s heavy social pressure to avoid embarrassing the DM. Here's all I can say: Making my rolls out in the open in front of my players changed the way I DM.
I think it makes me a better DM and reinforces the shared trust at my table.
