A pit trap that does 1d6 damage is potentially lethal in original Dungeons & Dragons for a new character. Which isn’t really how I play D&D. I want the challenge and amusement from the trap, not the gotcha. Monday’s session had one of these traps, but using 5e. So the dwarf fell in and survived. What was fun was the players then working out how the goblins had crossed it without a problem. (There was a disabling button).

What was really great was the player who realised buttons had to be on BOTH sides of the pit – which he demonstrated after the rest of the party had laboriously crossed the pit with ropes. That is what I want: the player feeling smart about their deductions!
