Unpopular opinion: I wish 5e #dnd used static damage for characters as well as monsters.

I agree, and would add an unpopular opinion of my own – if we could remove adding Con bonus to HD and Str/Dex bonus to damage rolls, hps would deflate tremendously without changing much else in the game. Plus I think combat would move about 20% faster. https://t.co/OO0dvdPv1w

One thing that is fascinating about AD&D – Hit Dice are a supremely useful measure of power. Since Con and Str bonuses were rare, the game wasn’t built around them. You could compare a critter’s HD to a spell’s # of damage dice and get a good sense of relative power.

I’ll add my own unpopular opinion: I think ability mods should be ability score – 10, full stop, so you can roll ability checks vs. your opponent’s ability score as the target DC. But I think you know this…

What is this, Alternity!? I think the alt version of 5e where we got everything we wanted has that stat scale and my love of skill/proficiency expressed as a die.

It is now.

More seriously, I loved it because it is so much easier to spot a mistake, especially for new players, and makes recovering from it a ton easier. Just roll the die you forgot, and you’re good.
