Hi twitter writers/authors:
I’d like to try out writing but story mechanics are super foreign to me. I have so many visual worlds I’d like to play with but have no clue how to weave a character centered story.
Any advice/courses/books for a complete beginner to start with? 🙂 My best advice is to get some friends and run a Dungeons & Dragons game. Within a few session your brain will start to craft characters, story arcs, fun situations, villains and their motivations, and all the details in between.
Plus you’ll have tons of fun. 🙂— 🐟🐠Adam Lee🏔🏕 (@adamofadventure) November 12, 2019
Try not to write boxed text and descriptions more than 2 sentences long. A study had been done that showed players drift off and don’t pay attention after that! So don’t write paragraph after paragraph of text that is supposed to be read to the players! You want to provide a setting and set-up for the adventures to interact with which writes the story as they play the game, Not write a story for them and lead them by the hand. (i.e. A game where the dice are variables rather than just simple on / off switches). Have a look at this blog to get ideas for writing an adventure: https://tenfootpole.org/ironspike
