I agree. The sense of awe and wonder fades. That's why I prefer manifestations (see my early Realms stuff), e.g. rosy glow sent by Lathander

Why roleplay the gods themselves? Why not use their priests, prophets, zealots, elementals, monsters, and spirits associated with them?
