I’m good at playing villains as a referee for RPGs. I’m terrible at being evil as a player, whether in tabletop or video games. Being evil is no fun for me in that context, somehow. In RPGs you generally know the BBEG is going to get his comeuppance and "justice" will probably be meted out harshly.
Evil PCs, on the other hand, are generally just an exercise in indulging your worst possible personal impulses, free of any meaningful consequences.— Six Hit Points (@sixhitpoints) December 23, 2021
And also you want the party to hate the BBEG, so it really feels satisfying when they defeat him. It's a way of upping the challenge meter.
Yes! Part of the thrill of running a game is knowing the heroes are going to stop the baddies, or at least try. Arguably, playing an evil PC lowers the challenge meter because you're not as constrained by alignment or whatever.— Six Hit Points (@sixhitpoints) December 23, 2021
