Is a mage by their nature bound to lead a solitary life? No, but most of them are either feared by others, or others want to exploit them. Couple that with the time demands for magical study and experimentation, and the solitary life becomes a likely road.

I can see that. Thanks for that answer. I guess my reasoning is, in addition to that, those that strive for power often lose they love or choose not to. As you said, the demands of magic also make companionship hard, if that makes sense. Agreed. It takes rare flexibility to be brilliant, to pursue mastery of Art, to cope with the changes working with magic inevitably brings, and at the same time deal well with others. Especially if they are also brilliant, pursuing their own mastery of the Art, and so on. "Life."
