Is dispel magic able to dispel magic effects ( Example being a magic door) or is it only spell effects?— Rees Morris (@ReesMorris3) January 12, 2020
The dispel magic spell (PHB pg 234) says "Any spell of 3rd level or lower on the target ends."
It ends ongoing spells, not any other magical effect.
Note: As a specific exception, it can remove magical traps that aren't spells (DMG pg 120-121). #dnd #WotCStaff https://t.co/usbo9PvZfk

Here’s a question, would this include say, a Nystul Arcane Aura spell, cast at 9th level or something silly like that?
High level spell casters laying them thick to gain protection VS low level dispels? Spells cast with a higher level spell slot are the level of the spell slot. PHB pg 201 "Casting a Spell at a Higher Level" goes into greater detail. 🙂That magic aura spell would require a 9th level dispel magic, or a casting ability check vs DC 19 to dispel with a lower one.

Absolutely! Yeah, pumping up spell levels as counterspell/dispel protection is super valid!

Except magical traps. 😉
