Is there a guide anywhere to running DnD combat? I ran the 5e starter set and combat was a slog. I’m running Blades in the Dark now, where a whole combat can be done in one roll, and it’s hard to see going back to DnD. Blades just might be a better fit for you – D&D tends to be more moment-to-moment in what it resolves compared to many indie style games. That said, I see combat as a dialogue. Job as DM is to keep descriptions and actions flowing.

My default for monsters is to find drama rather than tactical optimization. For instance – last week party fighting skeletons, three mobbed around fighter and monk, fourth climbed wall to attack cornered wizard; changed dynamic to “Save the wizard!”
