That’s what I was looking for!
I was reasoning about this remembering the philosophy behind spirit binding in exalted (binding elementals is disrespectful because you are stealing a natural phenomenon from somewhere, binding demons is “bad guys in chains”-like good).
Thanks 🙂 5E has moved towards Eberron; the 5E Monster Manual says that elementals "have no society or culture, and little sense of being" and that an elemental "has no desire except to course through the element of its own plane"… and the idea is that binding replicates this experience.
