Is using a magic item such as a staff of power a spell action or an action?

Using a magic item is it’s own action. It’s not Cast a Spell, if that’s what you’re asking, although you ARE casting a spell if the item says you are.

Important distinction too since you can’t counterspell an item Oh no, you absolutely can. If the item says it’s letting you cast a spell, you are casting a spell. It just uses a different kind of action. #WotCStaff

Yeah trying to figure out if activating a it near a mage slayer causes issues 🖤 Sure does.

Wait it does? Uh oh lol Yeah. If am item says that you use the item to cast a spell, you are casting a spell. 🙂
It just doesn’t use the specific Cast a Spell Action.
