It is literally a secret rule of D&D, hidden in the core rules, that I can take over as DM of any game at any moment so long as I am physically present with the DM or majority of the group and capable of rolling dice. I can confirm. This was written into the secret code when 5E was born. It also says that when I’m playing in any game anywhere I can always drop the phrase, “Mike told me that was legal in 5E” and it is accepted as canon.
