As much as I greatly enjoy seeing that somebody likes a thing in a manuscript, it’s not actually useful to add “NICE!” as an editor comment

Completely disagree. Writing is a solitary task for many, especially freelancers. Encouragement is the fuel that keeps the engine running.And the person who is like "I don't need positive feedback" is telling you they absolutely need it.
