Tracy Hickman changed not only table top gaming but the genre of fantasy forever. Players who picked up Dungeons & Dragons during the 5e explosion know The Curse of Strahd & Van Richten but what they might not know is that they were based on what is widely considered the greatest Dungeons & Dragons module ever written… Ravenloft. With its story arc & concentration on the villain as a playable character for Dungeon Masters, Tracy & his wife Laura changed DMing & TTRPGs forever.
Now ask anyone who grew up loving fantasy in the 1980s & you’d be hard pressed to find one who didn’t fall in love with the characters Tracy & Margaret Weis created as a part of their New York Times bestselling Dragonlance novels & modules… in case you haven’t figured out where this is headed, I was one of those kids.
In fact, my relationship with Wizards of the Coast/D&D was born directly out of my love for Dragonlance which led to my being hired six years ago as a consultant brought in to work alongside Tracy to bring the property of Dragonlance to life in live action.
The past six years have been a creative whirlwind & a dream come true as Ive ticked every box on a bucket list that I didn’t dare to dream up as a kid.
I got to write storylines & create characters for official adventure modules that were then turned into figurines sold in toy stores, appearing on clothing, & in video games. I then got to help redesign & relaunch my favorite fantasy board game Hero Quest, while flying around the world as the official ambassador for D&D. I even rolled a NAT 20 under the heat of the lights on The Late Late Show with Stephen Colbert during a 10 minute conversation about nothing but our mutual love of gaming.
I owe so much of this fun and fulfilling work to Tracy.
Now imagine the joy I felt getting a call from him out of the blue inviting me to join his team in developing he & Laura’s next incredible world… the story is fantastic & got my mind spinning immediately.
