Level 13+ in #DnD5e is an absolute beast to try and balance, even with a lot of experience under my belt, using custom enemies, legendary actions, lairs, stringing encounters together etc, and the players are still crushing stuff that the “math” says should be deadly… Not every fight needs to be a nail-biter, but I'm definitely going to have to do some MAJOR work to figure out how to make the confrontations with their big, narrative, enemies exciting and dangerous.

Sigh… Look I do not need replies of "I usually scale the encounter a few levels higher" replies. I'm not asking for advice, just lamenting. I KNOW what I'm doing, I have likely done everything you are going to tell me. 😛

It was difficult for me as well! There is a lot to keep track of. I had to have a chat with my players around that level once where I told them basically I can't keep track of what their characters can do anymore; there's too much going on behind the screen!

How many players in your group? 5 players. I've run a lot of high-level battles but I still hate the balancing act and making it *just right*, especially with the current party comp (Sorc and Cleric are glass cannons, two mega tanks and a good mid-tank/damage dealing warlock).

No doubt. I’m running a campaign entering it’s fourth year with 11 – 13th level characters. Every encounter is a boss level war. If you want to talk shop you know how to reach me.
I’ve also had some high level outside the box talks about how to fix the broken math…
