#dnd tip for DMs: monsters are one of your most powerful tools, not just for combat, but for storytelling and worldbuilding. Create the alter monsters to meet all of those goals.

One of my favorite things to do in combat is to have monsters / opponents make decisions that are optimal for their goals, but not tactically optimal for the combat.
It also makes clever, tactical foes stand out, and can add a different kind of drama to those fights.
