My DM is trying to make us roll characters changing the dice rolled for stats from 4d6 to 3d6, I’d love your opinion on this.
@BarrelRider101 That’s a totally viable technique. 4d6 Drop the lowest is just one way of doing it. 3d6 straight is not that far off

One guy in our group worked out that it changed the average scores from 11 to 8 which seams really bad.
@BarrelRider101 @MuffinManifesto it all depends on the kind of campaign you want to play. Low-power games can be fun, and tense!

Some of the best campaigns I have ever played in stats were rolled on 3d6. And this was way before stat increases were given out as level rewards, in fact unless you found some magical item that increased them what you got is what you had for the entire life of the character(often times suffering permanent stat losses as many creatures did permanent stat drain) in .Mathew is correct they can be tense and fun. You should learn to worry less about how powerful your character is and more about just playing the character and making him/her memorable.
His game, his rules. We’ve had this discussion since 1975. If you don’t like his game, start your own.
So what’s the problem? Roll the dice. Play the character.
