Proposed mechanic for arcane spellcasting: eschew material, verbal, and/or somatic components at a cost of d4 psychic damage per type per level. e.g. 1st level VSM = 3d4 psychic damage to cast. 2nd level V = 2d4
Thoughts? Interesting! Give it a shot. This may step on some metamagic toes, but it sounds fun! I assume this only covers “worthless” material components?

Less than 50gp variety. The argument being that the whole point of components is a buffer against the raw energy of magic. The “costly” materials that are destroyed in casting indicate a much larger spike of energy that would prove fatal to the uninsulated. The metamagic feats would attenuate the damage, reflecting the mages increased capacity to wield forces. Playtesting soon, hoping those captured naked wizards appreciate it.

I was thinking of Subtle Spell, which is a thing the sorcerer can do with metamagic others cannot. Make sure your sorc (if any) doesn't feel less special.
