UPDATE 8octsept
@AA_Zanes Revised Ranger, does the animal companion make death saves? Or just 0 = dead? Does it keep other features Like Pack Tactics?
it makes death saves, keeps features unless feature says otherwise #WotCStaff— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) October 1, 2016
@SalmonSquireFor favored enemy, does it make sense to use Wisdom Mod bonus (max 2 @ lvl 1, then max 4 @ lvl 6) instead of just flat bonus? I'm a little worried it could be too good at 1st level, but worth looking at. good idea! #wotcstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 29, 2016
@MarcoPhysChem @Mazoshi1987and the escape DC for a companion grapple scale with its STR mod right? 10+STR yes, it should. needs to be clearer in next update. #wotcstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 29, 2016
@Tim_H_HatcherConcerning the new Ranger, was it intended that the pet could learn skills like Arcana and Religion? yes – imagine a wise old beast, or companion sent by a deity #wotcstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 27, 2016
@Jarun2972 yes, ranger #wotcstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 27, 2016
@KrisKoletarNew UA Ranger has far fewer favored enemy options (e.g. no giants). What’s the reasoning there? check the greater favored enemy feature #wotcstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 28, 2016
@KrisKoletarOh. Derp. That’s what I get for skimming no worries – probably the most common question I've been asked!
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 28, 2016
@ZX6RobNew Ranger question, lots of debate on this — is it intended that you can move between attacks granted by Whirlwind Attack? you can move, but you determine targets when you use the action – might invalidate some attacks #wotcstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 28, 2016
@overpriced_crabRegarding the UA ranger, how do u handle increasing animal companion HP for creatures with multiple HD in their block, ex. 2d8+2 it's one HD per level, so 3d8+3, then 4d8+4, etc #wotcstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 28, 2016

UPDATE 27sept
@JeremyAlspachIf need to lower power on new Ranger. Maybe split Humanoids into 2-3 catagories? Example Civilized, Demi-Humans, and Monsterous. might be a route, if it’s a problem in play #wotcstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 26, 2016
@mikemearls UA Ranger – The Companion gains all the benefits of your Favored Enemy. Does this include the Language? (Please say Yes)
— Steven Connor (@Mazoshi1987) September 26, 2016
@Mazoshi1987 No.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 27, 2016
Sure, why not! Can’t speak, though, but can understand. #wotcstaff https://t.co/vrflhawUBN
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 26, 2016
@bedirthanfollow-up: If a parrot or raven could speak? just a few phrases
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 26, 2016
@myrdinpotter @mikemearls You gave an opposite answer on if the new ranger companion gets the language from favored enemy. Which is it? The design is undeveloped. We know it won’t give the companion speech. Might give the ability to understand.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 27, 2016
@Nod_Hero just so I can clarify for the party ranger, is there a rules reason I can tell them as to why not? There’s no rules reason yet. The design isn’t finished. I’m letting you know the intent.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 27, 2016
@Mazoshi1987Shame it being able to understand a language made sense given it follows rangers order’s completely. We’re OK with it understanding the language, just not speaking it.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 27, 2016
@dmvarrowe69The revised beast master companion: the 2 skill proficiencies, is that in addition to their current skills, or does it override? in addition
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 27, 2016
@mikemearls are the first 3 bullets of natural explorer an “always on” feature or are these only in the natural world?
— Lati Pexie (@LatiPexie) September 23, 2016
Always on. #WOTCstaff https://t.co/wEaWs8Elvw
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 23, 2016
@bedirthanI will resubmit. Kits of Old: Scout also has Natural Explorer. Should it get the latest Ranger version of that? yes
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 23, 2016
@Nod_HeroRevised Ranger “Your animal companion gains the benefits of your Favored Enemy feature” does that include the language? No.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 26, 2016
@erechelnegro playtesting and feedback will nail down details like that #WOTCstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 22, 2016
@ChrisPerkinsDnD @mikemearls Could a DM add Dragons to this list without breaking anything important?
— Justin T Donie (@JustinTime4DnD) September 21, 2016
You could, but dragons are already covered under greater favored enemy. #WOTCstaff https://t.co/KNdL8LrMnU
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 22, 2016
@Louie20x6 for new ranger, would you have to buy the rare herbs at a store? A seems kind of ridiculous that they can’t forage for them a day spent foraging sounds reasonable to me, to hit that needed total #WOTCstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 22, 2016
end update 27set
And for the curious – this design doesn’t assign mechanical weight to favored enemy. Pure bonus when fighting your chosen foe. #WOTCstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 9, 2016
In other words, Favored Enemy does not come at the cost of weakness elsewhere. Balanced assuming you don’t receive its bonus. #WOTCstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 9, 2016
@mikemearls From my 3E days, it is super-strong when you are, say, in the Geoff region fighting giants!
— Alphastream (@Alphastream) September 9, 2016
@Alphastream one thing i noticed is that, so far, it looks like its real value is turning atks vs. low CR monsters into one shots #wotcstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 9, 2016
@Alphastream clears out the critter lingering at 1 or 2 HP #wotcstaff
— (((Mike Mearls))) (@mikemearls) September 9, 2016
Great to see such interest in the ranger experiment! I’ll take your questions & comments into account if we take it to the next stage. #DnD
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 15, 2016
@vikke064 If response continues to be positive, the experiment will likely go into development. That’s our typical process.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 15, 2016
@mpetruzzI was thinking of the new ranger. It matters what stats you raise. It would matter for org play if it were published In development, such things will get refined, replaced, or clarified.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 15, 2016
@JeremyECrawford Do you think that the new Ranger has too high of a power level?
I feel the Natural Explorer feature is too powerful for 1st— FDU Scifi Fantasy (@FDUScifiFantasy) September 16, 2016
Initial designs, including the new ranger, are almost always too powerful. We tune them in development. #DnD https://t.co/JL8v2vU6wH
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 16, 2016
@exentrik137For the new UA ranger, is it the intent for a beast ally to learn feats with its ASIs? Alternatively, would you allow it? No on both counts.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 16, 2016
@JeremyECrawford Apologies if repeat. Does Beast Master companion in UE rework scale with char level or Ranger level? RAW reads as character
— Dave (@Critter_Bitic) September 20, 2016
The UA ranger hasn’t been tuned for multiclassing yet. We tune a class for multiclassing after the design moves into development. #DnD https://t.co/ac633gXU55
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 20, 2016
@CoreyBatie @mikemearlswas it the intention of the new UA ranger’s pet to be able to take feats instead of ASI like a player character No.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) September 21, 2016
@ChrisPerkinsDnD Is there a reason that Dragons are not a Favored Enemy in the Revised Ranger, or did I miss something? Just curious
— Michael DeLage (@ducati_m2b) September 21, 2016
I think it’s because @mikemearls hates dragons so much. https://t.co/kJcz5jxk1O
— (((Chris Perkins))) (@ChrisPerkinsDnD) September 21, 2016
I’m not sure I like the “if” or “experiment”. I want to see one more revision and then a print. Looking forward to survey.
For everyone asking Vex using the new Ranger UA, at most a bit here or there, if at all. Don’t want to change horses mid-stream! 😉— Matthew Mercer (@matthewmercer) September 15, 2016
