One thing that’s good to remember about TTRPG design is that a majority of the folks that play just want to sit down and have fun. You can provide millions of options, but remember that the most popular D&D character build by far is (non-variant) human champion fighter.

Better to focus on your core gameplay experience than to provide a million options for players (including GMs as players here because they are). And I love me some options! This thought brought to you by me writing lots of options and also worried about a core experience.I think some folks are missing the point. I’m not saying character options are a bad thing. I love having them! I enjoy making them. I’m saying don’t overlook them at the expense of a solid experience playing the game no matter which options are chosen.
