Rereading Complete Book of Elves for some research & let me say the internet needs to apologize to
@ColinMcCombI have no idea why the hell anyone had a problem with the bladesinger/song. Nothing in the abilities make me look at the kit & think “oh, dear god, what have I done”I played several Bladesingers and they were always fun, and effective without being overpowering. Maybe I just hadn't developed my optimizer powers yet, but it was always a good experience. Sometimes I sure do hate the internet.

It’s the age-old “I have the orcslayer subclass, I hate orcs, on the upside I get +100 vs orcs, but the downside is that I can never be friendly with orcs, who I hate hatefully” problem…That's what I said, Shavey! (also, hey, hi!)

The problem was really just balance. As I realized later, one should pair RP bonuses with RP penalties, and similarly with mechanical effects. If you have a non-RP group mechanical bonus can become too OP.
