Roll-play vs Role-play is such a toxic and false dichotomy. Let’s get rid of it. Personal bias: Mechanics and narrative are inseparable and inform one another. When they reinforce each other, everything is moving in the right direction.

100%. It's like pitting chocolate against peanut butter. Life's better when you have a bit of both!

I find myself in the similar mindset when a player continually complains that there aren’t “enough builds available” for the 5E concept that he wishes to play. My big observation is that this same player admits that “combat” is what he actually enjoys and that “RP” isn’t what he feels suited for.. The silence from his chair is deafening during non-combat encounters. But we’ve worked it out and have enjoyed diverse gaming for nearly 10 years. Still, I keep trying to lure him out of the closet of optimizing combat-oriented play. And he continues to teach me how to min/max whatever concept I come up with. LOL !
