I’ve been sleeping on sorcerers a little. I’ve had my thoughts on their whole feel ever since 5e released, but I’ve been playing one recently (admittedly as an NPC party member), and holy crap, y’all. Font of Magic is FUN. #dnd Metamagic is cool and there's lots of power and crunch there to play with, but there's something special about clutch creating another spell slot of your highest level after you've run dry and saving the day with it.

Sorcerers and Wizards are so hard for me because I feel like they have SO much stuff to keep track of. Full spellcasters are most assuredly on the high end of the complexity spectrum, that is a very fair way to feel.

Do you include Warlocks among the full Spellcasters in this case? Because I don’t think I had even read the rules for wizards when I realised that Warlocks would be among my favourites in 5e and started reading Brimstone Angels for inspiration. Warlocks are weird, but are definitely complex.

In what way do you consider them complex? I find them very simple to play round to round, but there are still many options to play around with during character creation and level up. You have lots of choices to make for the class. First from being spellcasters (limited number of spell slots doesn't really impact this, you have to make the selections of spells known), and then from Eldritch Invocations and your Pact Boon.
Compare to most rogues or fighters.

I think that is why I like the class so much. I tend to end up making new characters for fun when there is too much time between sessions. The warlock’s complexity makes character creation really fun, but the complexity is mostly focused outside the session. Perfect fit for me 🙂
That's great! I know players who balk at that, though, so I like that there are very easy to grab-and-go options for them, highly complex options in wizards and friends, and then some in-betweens like the 1/3 and 1/2 casters. Something for everyone.— Dan Dillon (@Dan_Dillon_1) June 12, 2021
