Would you consider the world of the Forgotten Realms to be Sword and Sorcery, High/Epic Fantasy, or a mix of both? The published Realms is a mix of both.#Realmslore

My Cormyrean players want to make Rivior’s Keep their base (foolish think to do, right?) And they asked me 1/ how far is the Keep from Eveningstar? 2/ How long is the Starwater gorge? And it’s difficult for me to answer them, so I ask the Master Evenor you are 🙂 My maps aren't near me right now, but the Starwater Gorge is some miles long, and Rivior's Keep is about an hour's slow amble up its western side from the mouth of the gorge, where the plateau edge that overlooks Eveningstar is. So, not far.#Realmslore

n my 30 years of stomping around the Forgotten Realms, I never put together that “Waukeen” and “Joaquin” sound the same until one of my current players made a reference to her re-emerging as a deity as “Waukeen Phoenix.”
Heh. I suspect it was.
"Suspect" because I didn't create Waukeen. I think @GrubbsTweet did. One of the nicest and most creative men I know, and a friend I value.
I always think of Waukeen as "there she goes, the Merchantsfriend, Waukeen away with all the money." ;}#Realmslore— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) February 11, 2021
This is drawn from real-world folklore: "cold iron" works against fey, and witch charms, and other magic.
Sacred? Depends on your beliefs. Alchemists say it's an inherent characteristic of the material, nothing to do with divinity at all. Priests would disagree.#Realmslore— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) February 13, 2021

How common was bee keeping in the realms for honey and wax? Is it safe to assume that bees would have been the only source of wax?— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) February 14, 2021
1)
Beekeeping is very common, wherever the climate allows. Honey keeps forever, and so is THE sweetener in much of the Realms.
But “wool wax” (lanolin) from sheep is also known and used in temperate and cold regions, and waxes… 2)
…are also derived from whales (especially in cold regions like Fireshear and Ironmaster).
In the Utter East and Var the Golden and Raurin, more wax is derived from scale insects than bees.#Realmslore— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) February 14, 2021
I know there must be numerous characters but do you have a favorite or a couple favorite you liked working with? I've created around 20,000 named characters for the Realms, and they're all part of the tapestry. I try not to play favourites, but if you press me, I'll admit to like writing about Mirt, Storm, Filfaeril, Florin, The Simbul, and the Srinshee. After that, Elminster.#Realmslore

Thank you @TheEdVerse. Wow that’s a lot. I knew the Realms were large but I had no idea that it expanded over 20k characters haha. If I knew I wouldn’t ask such a silly question. I do appreciate you taking the time though. I’m new to the realms I like answering. :}
After fifty-five years, there's a lot piled up under the heading "the Realms." The setting is older than D&D, and started as the place I was telling fantasy stories in just to entertain my young self, so…many characters with stories attached.#Realmslore— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) March 3, 2021

That is so cool. I am envious of that. I once started writing when I was younger (around the time the LOTR movies were coming out). Realized it sounded just like “the two towers” haha. Kind of gave up. Idea float in every once in a while though.— David (@DavidWSlater89) March 4, 2021
@TheEdVerse I have yet another afterlife ? for ya: what happens to the souls of infants & children? Do they go to the god their parents (most) worshiped, by a god who tends to watch over children, or are they considered "unclaimed"?
— 🏳️🌈 Kendra Lawrence 🏳️🌈 (@Kendradream) March 12, 2021
1)
It depends on the child or infant. If they noticed one deity, or a priest or ritual or manifestation of that deity, over others, their soul goes to that deity (which is one reason why some parents and some clergy like to give… 2)
…toys to be chewed upon, hugged, and loved in cradles that are symbols of, or associated with, particular deities). If they were baptised or consecrated to a deity, and worshipped no other deity more strongly, they are claimed…#Realmslore— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) March 14, 2021
3)
…by THAT deity. If they fell in love with an image (painting or sculpture) associated with a particular deity…and so on. Deities are “grabby” when it comes to souls; “unclaimed” is something no one wants. Deities of the dead… 4)
…even try to claim souls by conducting particular funerary rites.
And Lurue will try to find and guide the souls of all who die alone in the forests or wilderlands; if they have no deity to cleave to, they’ll abide with her.#Realmslore— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) March 14, 2021
@TheEdVerse You've created adventures and modules for D&D and the Forgotten Realms. Which ones are your favorites and most beloved, and why?
— Alameda (@pauloalmeida074) March 8, 2021
1)
I’m not sure I have one. Most of my published adventure design was in the pre-digital era, so wordcount was always my foe; I’m always wincing at what had to be left out, and lamenting the difference in play between the “home” Realms campaign, which is all… 2)
…character interaction with NPCs, intrigue, multiple interwoven subplots with game focus driven by the players, etc.
So I look at Undermountain or Myth Drannor or The Halls of The High King and think "I got to put a lot of goodies in that, it's a fun toolbox." …#Realmlore— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) March 8, 2021
3)
And I look at the Haunted Halls of Eveningstar and think, “Well, I managed to shoehorn about a tenth of the original into those scant pages, but I think the skeleton that’s left works pretty well.”
So, those are some adventures I think turned out successfully. 4)
And I guess that's as close as I come to favourites.
I'm more in love with the Volo's Guides and big sandboxes like the Waterdeep boxes or the FR Adventures hardcover.#Realmslore— Ed Greenwood (@TheEdVerse) March 8, 2021
