Unpopular D&D opinion: The only canon that really matters is the story you make together at the table, I like to read through sourcebooks for inspiration, but I don’t consider myself beholden to any of it, if going against canon makes for a fun experience.

Uh, this isn’t unpopular. Canon used to be so important, fans would hang on every release. That evolved and will change again. Now, canon is there for nostalgia, inspiration, and a way to help shape organized play experiences. If you don’t like something in an RPG, change it. I've seen SEVERAL comments about the text in RPGs and how it's absolute. It isn't. No designer can control what you do at the table; we can only do our best to present materials you'll use as a jumping off point. Often, fans become designers just by making house rules.

Canon is also important on the back end for business and licensing, but that's a very long thread for another day. 🤓
