“But yon SPELL-TROLLS are magical creatures!” the cleric protested, hurling a holy smiting glow spell that also failed.

“Next time,” the wizard said firmly, “we bring along a philosopher. To debate our ways through magic-death zones, so our spells can prevail anyway.”

The cleric turned to run. The hungry trolls were gaining.
