Give it a try, see what happens. We had good luck with it, but we also had deaths, so, mileage may vary.
Granted those deaths were because people insisted on standing next to a symbol of stunning for multiple rounds fighting helmed horrors. That was a factor.

So to clarify: The suggestion is if you want say a “hard” encounter you only count it as “hard” if the XP values are represented by foes who carry XP which when added up equal the targets from the “XP Thresholds by PC Level” table on DMG82? Yes. There's a multiplier for having more than one monster, and my gaming group found that made fights too easy, the multiplier was too much of an increase to the stated difficulty of the encounter.

Hard to factor in bad decision-making! That shit's CR 30. They were bleeding to death and we couldn't get close to them to stabilize. Had to watch them make death saves and slowly die, while fending off things my warlock couldn't damage. :/ RIP.
