I’m working on an article for myself and I want opinions. With TTRPGs, what are some stuff you wish people had told you just as you were getting started? Designing or playing? What’s advice you would have for younger people who want to?The rules are a starting point. Change, emphasize, ignore any of them as you need to facilitate way you want to play. If something doesn’t feel good, consider changing it until it does.
This goes triple for aesthetics. Reskin and change sensory descriptions to fit your wants.

I think mine would be "design situations, not stories." You can have strong themes, scripted moments, etc., but most folks don't like having a narrative forced on them. At the end of the day, the players get to tell the story together.

That is indeed an example of doing what you want.
