What are your thoughts on flanking in #dnd? Some people say it can break the game and make combat encounters way too easy. My general thought are that someone who is flanking another creature should have some kind of advantage on their attack, BUT…

I don’t use the flanking option in 5e. Makes advantage ubiquitous and steps on class/race features that grant advantage.

I don’t think my players would let me “turn it off” after all this. But… how can I go against anything @Dan_Dillon_1 recommends? It is indeed difficult to dial the throttle backwards mid-game.

See I’m completely with you there. If it were a +2 bonus, I’d be much more okay with that. “Advantage” is much better than a +2 bonus. Plus, just giving people a flat +2, would sidestep any special abilities that are automatically triggered by having “Advantage”. Exactly this. Flanking in earlier editions was more challenging to achieve because you couldn’t move around and reposition yourself within an enemy’s threat range without taking an AoO. You can in 5e, so there’s no obstacle to constantly being flanked/flanking. Yep, that’s the essence of the difference. No opportunity attacks for moving within reach means nothing tactical about the repositioning.

It would also stack with advantage.

OOh I wasn’t talking about stacking bonus with adantage. I was talking about replacing advantage. h if you replace it across the board it’s basically fine if a bit less fun.
I was thinking you changed flanking to +2 rather than advantage in general. I’m with you now.
