Hopefully you see this and can answer. I was wondering what kind of prep work you do with special guests on @CriticalRole? As I am the DM for @ModifiedRoll and I’m thinking of getting some special guests on at some point and some tips would be great. No worries! I sit with them and let them know some about the world/setting, & what the adventure is currently tackling. I help them build their character how they want, they create their personality & story, & we work together to knit their story/goals into the current narrative.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. That is really helpful.
Is there any way to prevent the game from stagnating as it were whilst the guests are there? Find a hook in the guest’s story, and something you hope for them to accomplish before they leave, and throw events into the slow moments that can instigate player motion towards the goal! 🙂— Matthew Mercer (@matthewmercer) January 16, 2019
I know at least Joe, Deb and Darin all played characters they had played before. So they Arkhan, Twiggy, and Sprigg were all made before the actors were invited onto Critical Role. Exactly! Each character is the guest’s concept, and I’m merely there to help them realize it within the system and offer guidance. More experienced players have little need for aid in that department.
