I was wondering about this while walking the dog – Matt seems to make COPIOUS preparation, and that’s not really your style.
Lazy Dungeon Master 1 referred to Chris Perkins as a great example of efficient prep, without knowing Mercer beforehand, how much do you think he preps?

Mercer said on my show with him that he preps two hours per hour or gameplay, which, as you say, is far from the Lazy DM style. I actually talk about this in my new book as an example that the Lazy DM style isn’t for everyone. https://t.co/MbTi4bJSKG

Aye, it didn’t used to be that much, but when you have so many people pulling apart your world building, seeking consistency, the pressure kinda builds. The double-edged sword.

While I find the article useful for some folks, every style of DMing is unique and works for SOME tables. Not for all. Players vary, expectations vary, and while I can’t find the convo mentioned, I assume I know where it went, and that’s fine.

We all learn from each other, and there are other DMs who would be muuuuch better at running certain tables than I. I’m glad if anything I’ve done helps some folks, but I also don’t want people feeling like my style is “correct” by any means. That’s unfair pressure.

AL especially is a different beast to a friend’s table at home. I understand why many folks would react poorly to such a convo (I get it often), so it’s a “best of intentions” scenario. Regardless, let’s all just have fun and play games. 🙂

Maybe 1-2 hours. Technically, for session-to-session prep time, it’s only a little longer than that these days…but running a homebrew world, the world-building effectively doubles that (for macro/future locations and events)
